Dual-mobility implants have been studied in both primary and THA Revisions.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis comparing dual-mobility and fixed-bearing implants found a significant reduction in revision due to dislocation for dual-mobility implants in primary THA.
In THA revisions, the analysis also found lower odds of revision due to dislocation. The authors noted that additional high-quality prospective research is still needed, particularly for long-term outcomes.

When Might Surgeons Consider MDM for THA Revisions?
Surgeons may consider MDM when they want more flexibility during a hip replacement procedure. The system can pair with different compatible acetabular shells, tapers, femoral heads, and stems. MDM also offers constrained and standard bearing options. The constrained option can support patients with severe soft-tissue deficiency, while the standard option provides a simpler and cost-effective design.
Economic Considerations
A 2017 Stryker study that found MDM more cost-effective than conventional constructs in that study and identifies $74 million in annual U.S. THA revision costs associated with hip dislocations.

The economic value of an implant should be considered alongside clinical outcomes rather than looking only at the initial implant price.
